Akutan Airport, Akun Island
The recently built airport on Akun Island serving the fishing/fish processing village of Akutan on Akutan Island in the eastern Aleutians, seen across the channel, accessible by boat or helicopter.
Previously, Akutan was regularly serviced from Dutch Harbor/Unalaska with a Grumman Goose flying-boat amphibious airplane which would "land" in the harbor, extend its wheels once safely slowed and taxi up a ramp at the town's waterfront. Akutan Island has no land flat enough for a runway and amphibious airplanes are too rare and expensive to keep in service, apparently.
